From My Grandmother’s Lips

Shonaleigh is a Drut’syla – an oral storyteller from the Yiddish tradition, and one of the foremost tellers on the British scene at the moment. She has been described as a cross between Shahrazad and Jane Horrocks and has an extensively varied repertoire of stories and songs. As she says, there is a proverb that asks “Why did God create people? – Because he loves a good story. We all make sense of our lives in the form of a narrative – we tell people what happens to us.”

Here, Shonaleigh tells us some Jewish tales and how her background inspired her to become a creative performer. Length 33 mins.

Music performed by the She’Koyokh Klezmer Ensemble.
