World Book Day 2019

Thursday, 7th March 2019 marks World Book Day 2019 and a busy World Book Week for storytellers up and down the UK.

A few years ago, Shonaleigh did a project with Goldsmiths University to bring story into schools to support language learning.

The TALES project investigated the educational impact of oral and digital storytelling in formal education.

It involved 8 partners – teacher trainers, story tellers and digital experts – from 7 countries across Europe. The project’s activities and outcomes included a state of the art about digital storytelling, documentation on examples of good practice and pilot studies, “stories” created by schools (age range 6-18) and, most importantly, a manual for teachers (published in November 2015).

The Languages Company worked with Goldsmiths, University of London, and the internationally renowned storyteller Shonaleigh Cumbers – one of the last traditionally trained storytellers of the Yiddish drut’syla tradition.

The project ran from November 2013 to November 2015.

This article was originally published on the The Languages Company web site.

This video illustrates some of the work of the project and Shonaleigh’s involvement.
